Organic Crib Mattress
Trista and Ryan's Pick: Natural Rubber Crib Mattress
Problem:
Infants spend about 16-17 hours a day asleep in their crib! Your baby’s bedding can consist of a toxic brew of chemicals that you cannot see or smell such as unhealthy artificial (petroleum derived) foams & fibers, dangerous flame retardant chemicals and pesticides which can expose your baby to toxic fumes as they outgas. In addition, stain and water resistant treatments add more VOC’s to the air we breathe.
Solution:
Choose an organic, untreated and natural crib mattress with no chemical flame retardants. Natural wool acts as a safe substitute to harsh flame retardant chemicals found in most conventional mattresses and is also dust mite resistant. Avoid permanent press sheets or draperies which can contain formaldehyde and look for organic fabrics have not been treated with pesticides whenever possible. If you or your child suffers from allergies or asthma, use barrier covers for pillows and mattresses.
