Now that the snow has finally disappeared, it's time to start giving the sidewalk chalk a workout again. Why not challenge the kids on your block to a game of Sidewalk Bingo.
What you'll need:
- A bucket of sidewalk chalk
- A deck of cards
- A hat Some pebbles or sticks to use as markers
What to do:
-
Hand each child a piece of sidewalk chalk and ask each child to choose a square of sidewalk.
-
Show each child how to create his or her own Bingo card on his or her square of sidewalk. (For younger kids, a 3 by 3 Bingo card generally works best: three squares across and three squares down. Older kids may want to create a slightly more elaborate Bingo card -- perhaps a 5 by 5 card.)
-
Each child can fill in his or her card by randomly writing in the numbers and letters that can be found on a standard deck of playing cards (2 through 10 plus J, Q, K, and A). Again, you may want to keep things simpler for younger kids, perhaps limiting the choice of numbers and letters that are used in the game.
-
Toss a deck of playing cards inside a hat. The Bingo caller should pull out one card at a time, calling out the number or letter that appears on each card.
-
As each number or letter is called, each player should check to see if that number or letter shows up on his or her Bingo card. If it does, the player should mark the square by using pebbles, sticks, or some other type of object as a marker.
-
The first player to fill a horizontal or vertical row on his or her card shouts "Bingo!" and is declared the winner.

Such a cute idea. Sidewalk chalk is one of the best inventions! You can play hundreds of games like the one mentioned above or create fun art of all kinds. Some of the things we have done are: drew a "road" with stop signs and arrows for the kids to ride the bikes on, used a paint brush and water to wet the chalk and paint with it, hopscotch and the list goes on and on!
